What do you use for security?
« on: October 25, 2009, 09:48:27 AM »
My security system is about to expire (Iolo). I don't like it, so I won't renew. I think $50 a year is extortion, but that seems to be the going rate for renewals on these programs. I'm really disgusted with the whole deal, cuz they all talk a good game, but something nasty always gets past them, causing me grief. Anybody have something good to recommend for firewall, anti-virus, and performance/enhancement tools?

PC Tools Spyware Doctor with the added antivirus protection. It has been really great for us, been using it on two computers for two years . Wifey just renewed it this past friday, I think it was 29.95 for both computers.

I have windows defender. It's free. It has blocked a couple nasties that tried to invade my computer. I have not had any get through to my computer.

I also had AVG and it is a good program but, it slowed my emails down so, I uninstalled it.

Hmmm, I like the sound of "free." Maybe I'll try that and see how it goes.  :-* Phil.

Suz,

I love AVG. Have the paid version both at work and at home. Doesn't slow me down at all... not like Norton or TrendMicro used to! I've got Kaspersky running on another machine, and it is similar to AVG. Watch the sales, and you might find Kaspersky at a good price! Kaspersky now offers coverage on up to three machines for one price, and AVG offers a 2-year deal.

At the same time, I use Spybot Search and Destroy, and Malwarebytes (available at http://www.download.com). They are FREE.

I also use CCleaner to clean cookies/cache and keep registry up to date. It's FREE, too!

I've used AdAware, but that seems to interfere with other security programs, so I've removed it from all my machines. (With 2 teenagers, I've got 4 computers running at home, and one old dinosaur at work.)

I just bought a new Dell laptop and it comes with McAfee 18 month subscription and I also have it on my desktop puter.  Have been very happy with it.  Tried Norton several years ago and found it to be very memory hungry and still managed to get a trojan so stopped using it.  I know there are quite a few freeware programs but don't know much about them.

I have been using McAfee for quite awhile and I have no problems with it at all.

We also had Norton, Kaspersky and CA and we didn't like any of them
